Tuesday (November 14th) Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny. The Chatsworth Fine Art Sale including "The Final Chapter of the Yeats Family Collection". Some 85 per cent of lots sold for a total of €550,000. Hundreds of items of art, antiques and collectibles were consigned by the adult grandchildren of WB Yeats.
Lot 632, a pair of "pince-nez" (pinch-nose) glasses once owned by WB Yeats sold for €10,000 – more than 16 times the top estimate of €500-€600. The top price was, however, achieved for Lot 631, described as "The Original Mosada Portrait" by John Butler Yeats – a pen-and-ink portrait of his son WB Yeats, that was reproduced with the narrative poem, Mosada, in the poet's first publication – which sold for €21,000 – 3½ times the top estimate (€4,000-€6,000).
