Lot 229, a ruby and diamond "Flamingo" brooch, with rubies of approx. 0.70ct in total, diamonds of approx. 0.72ct in total €2,100 (€1,300-€1,500) [see pic]; Lot 228, a ruby, sapphire and diamond "Butterfly" brooch, with ruby of approx. 0.30ct, sapphires of approx. 3ct in total, diamonds of approx. 0.90ct in total, €1,700 (€1,400-€1,500). Among the unsold was Lot 169: a diamond solitaire pendant and chain with report stating diamond to be 3.11ct G VS2, mounted in platinum, in a fitted presentation case €38,000-€4,0000.
Tuesday (August 29th), Sheppard's Irish Auction House, Durrow, Co Laois. Auction of the house contents of "Lota', Brighton Rd, Foxrock, Dublin: the estate of the late Patricia Moore. Some 92 per cent of lots sold. Lot 87, Portrait of a Gentleman an oil-on-canvas painting described as Italian school, 17th century, sold for €20,500 – almost seven times the top estimate (€2,000-€3,000); Lot 9, a large, 19th-century gilt-framed, overmantel mirror (provenance Dardistown Castle, Co Meath) €10,200 (€2,500-€3,500); Lot 188, a George III period white marble chimneypiece €7,000 (€8,000-€12,000); Lot 180, an Irish silver claret jug, made by Robert Smith in Dublin in 1843, €2,600 (€3,000-5,000); , Lot 224, Gortahork Estuary, Co Donegal oil-on-canvas by George Gillespie €1,900 (€1000-€1,500); Lot 231, a Regency period mahogany and satinwood inlaid spinet (square piano) made by Astor and Horwood, London, and retailed by Paul Alday, Dame Street, Dublin, €1,600 (€800-€1,200). Among the unsold was Lot 82, described as a 19th-century Irish children's "correction chair" – used to correct bad posture and also used in nurseries as a form of punishment (€150-€250).
Monday (August 28th), Gavin Gardiner Ltd Auctioneers, auction of Modern & Vintage Sporting Guns, Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland. A pair of 12-bore "The Premier Quality" sidelock ejector guns by E J Churchill that were built in 1928, owned by the late Irish racehorse trainer Vincent O'Brien £9,375 (£8,000-£12,000).
