“Just tapped” are two of the loveliest words – even if they’re spoken with kind of cool indifference by a barman. A fresh keg, ready for pouring, usually means a beer that will taste as hoppy and delicious as it ever will be.
Enjoying a pint on draught – or getting to try a new and special beer release on keg – is not always easy, though. Or so Wexford man Sean Walsh discovered a while back when visiting Donegal and looking for a pub serving his favourite Kinnegar beer. He decided to create an app, with his brother Barry, a web developer, to tackle a growing conundrum for good-beer drinkers.
Find My Pint is a simple idea: type in your location and it’ll list what bars are serving on tap; search by beer or bar and it’ll give you up-to-date info on where and what you can get. Launched late in the summer, there have been more than 2,000 downloads so far, while this month it’s getting two new features. “When you load now you’ll get a list of nearby pubs and what they’re serving. And we’ve also added a new favourite beers feature,” says Barry.
So far, 60-70 pubs around Dublin have signed up, including Porterhouse Central, Back Page, Blackbird, P Macks and a host of others. “The main focus is on Dublin at the moment,” says Barry, “but we’ve a few pubs from Cork, and we’ll be rolling it out further soon.”
Scrolling through the app (at the time of writing), there’s Lervig’s Orange Velvet at Brickyard in Dundrum; Black IPA by Blacks of Kinsale in Fitzgerald’s in Sandycove; Stone Barrel’s Club Hopicana at 57 the Headline on Clanbrassil Street; Whiplash Rollover Session IPA at Whelan’s and the Legal Eagle . . . and plenty more.
It’s good to know all that quality beer is being poured across the city and beyond – and where to find it.
