The five-minute face is the stuff of beauty lore. It is perpetuated as achievable, but too often it is only doable for people who are practised in make-up application. For those who don’t enjoy make-up application but just like the way it makes them look, faffing around with blending brushes and lipstick does not a five-minute face make. On the mornings when the five-minute face is a necessity, I think: “What is the bare minimum I can do while still feeling good about the way I look?” Some days, of course, the answer is not to wear any make-up; others, I still want the effect without the effort.
Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief Gel Cream (€45)
If your skin isn’t lacking in oil, all you need when you’re in a rush and want foundation to sit well is a super-hydrating moisturiser with a bit of slip to it. This one is among my all-time favourites, being deliciously refreshing, plumping, and conducive to good foundation.
Avène Very High Protection Mineral Cream SPF50+ (€19.99)
Even in a rush, UV protection is essential. This protects even intolerant and reactive skin, and is highly effective.
Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Gel Touch Foundation (€55)
If you read this column regularly, you’ll have seen this product before, but it is without exception the best foundation I’ve encountered this year. After much experimentation, I find this is best applied with a clean, fluffy foundation brush for a flawless and glowing finish in moments.
Eyelure x Fleur de Force Brow Tamer (€14.99)
This double-ended wand allows you to sculpt and set brows in moments for a natural but polished finish.
NARS Soft Matte Concealer (€30)
The latest concealer offering from NARS is subtle, matte, and devilishly good at hiding anything you want hidden, from blemishes to dark circles. Tap on with fingers.
Clarins Ombre Matte Cream Eyeshadow (€24)
If you have the time for eyeshadow, pop a neutral cream finish on with a fingertip. These require very little work or blending to look “done”, and apply in seconds.
L’Oréal Paris Miss Baby Roll Mascara (€10.49)
Laugh at the name all you want, but this budget mascara is sensationally volumising, and deeply pigmented. One coat is enough.
NARS Liquid Blush in Orgasm (€31)
The (in)famous NARS Orgasm blush now comes in a delectable liquid finish. Tap on a tiny amount (it is incredibly pigmented) with a finger or blend with your fluffy brush. It gives a radiant, gently flushed finish.
Product of the Week: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder (€42)
To accommodate easy and speedy application of make-up, I’ve suggested a series of cream products – they simply involve less faff and blending than powders. If you find you shine anywhere, dab a touch of a good loose powder where needed. This one is beautiful, but there are equally serviceable options from brands such as Maybelline and Seventeen. Finish the look with a touch of lip balm or gloss and head out the door.
