A large fire at George’s Dock in Dublin city centre has been brought under control, Dublin Fire Brigade said on Tuesday night.

“We’ve begun to scale back the response. Smoke is visible in the area and we are damping down,” DFB said in a statement.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, a number of units responded to a fire that broke out near the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), prompting an urgent request for Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) to attend the scene.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, however a crew of firefighters were seen battling severe flames on the underside of a bridge at George’s Dock.

Other footage appeared to capture bluey-green flames, while the business and residential area was blanketed in thick smoke.

A subsequent statement from GNI said it had a crew on the site, but that it was “not yet known at this stage whether the cause of the fire is gas-related”.

The incident, which drew a significant emergency services response, also caused some disruption to nearby public transport.

The fire broke out early on Tuesday evening. Several firefighters were using 70mm hoses to control it and could be seen kneeling at the bottom of a dried-out dock area with hoses pointed at the bridge.

A number of fire tenders were dispatched and senior officers were at the north inner city scene coordinating efforts.

Gardaí were also present at the scene, which is close to KPMG’s offices at Harbourmaster Place.

As a result of the incident, Luas Red Line services were only operating from Tallaght/Saggart to Connolly. There was no service from Busáras to The Point.

“Luas tickets are valid on Dublin Bus for the duration of this service disruption. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” a statement said.

Footage of the blaze had been widely shared on social media.
