“I need to be loved,” says the young woman walking up the rickety staircase of the house on North Great George’s Street where this intimate site-specific curio,

, unfolds. With its mouldering plasterwork and skeletal floorboards the building’s dereliction is a metaphor for the crumbling lives of the building’s inhabitants, who haunt the candle-lit rooms like the ghosts of a century of living. The narrative composed by Louise White and Kate Nic Chonaonaigh is deliberately allusive. Who these people are, what relationship they have with each other, what tragedies they have suffered are finally withheld. However in affecting visual images – miniature prams filled with candles, maids scrubbing stains from the floor – the uncanny atmosphere achieves a concrete, sensate effect, while the lavender scent of a young gentleman’s touch and the sweet sticky taste of blackberry jam lingers long after the short performance piece ends.
