[The Wag was more than just an after-hours catwalk for London’s hip, famous and fabulous seeking to be featured in the pages of The Face or i-D.
The music played at the Soho club, which operated from 1982 to 2001, was just as exacting and scene-setting as its strict door policy. What clubbers such as David Bowie, Joe Strummer, Prince, Kate Moss and others got to hear was a soundclash of funk, Latin, disco, house, hip-hop, electro and much more.
This four-CD set, curated by Wag founder Chris Sullivan, aims to recreate those halcyon days with a superb collection of songs and grooves. There's much to treasure here, from the evergreen sway of Aaron Neville's Hercules and the wonky pop delights of Herbie Hancock's Rockit to the funk strides of James Brown's The Boss and the swagger of Digital Underground's Humpty Dance.
