Once the archetypal post-dubstep outfit, Mount Kimbie have long since moved on, and they continue to plough a singular furrow on their third full-length album. Like its predecessor, Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, the London duo twist their arsenal of synths, bass and drums into colourful, inventive shapes. There's dissonance aplenty, but with a freewheeling energy and plenty of groove, too, as drums are pushed high in the mix on the motorik thrust of Four Years and One Day, Audition and Delta. Regular collaborator King Krule sounds more confrontational than ever on Blue Train Lines, the percussive cadence of his vocals locking in with the beats, while James Blake and Micachu (aka Mica Levi) make strong guest appearances too. The abiding impression, however, is of two talented producers using the studio as their playground and having a great deal of fun doing it. mountkimbie.com
