Sweetness is in pretty short supply in the bitter and twisted world of contemporary jazz harmony so the honeyed tones of Poland's leading piano trio will be balm to many a jaded ear. Though still in their 30s, pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz and drummer Michal Miskiewicz have been together for more than 20 years (most of them serving as trumpeter Tomasz Stanko's rhythm section) so their concept is mature and the levels of empathy are high. The addition of Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder makes evident the trio's debt to Keith Jarrett's European quartet, but there is more to Wasilewski than mere imitation. And who could ever imagine Jarrett covering Sting's Message in a Bottle? propermusic.com
