Electric Picnic, Main Stage

They famously began their careers with the mission statement of “making music for girls to dance to”, but Franz Ferdinand’s main stage set had men, women, children, and presumably an assorted array of Stradbally’s wildlife, on their respective feet.

This is exactly how you work a festival crowd: take one group of Scottish alt-rockers, add a healthy heaping of jerky guitar riffs, one charismatic frontman who engages with his audience, shake well, open and allow melody, magnetism and magic to fizz forth.

With a setlist culled from all four albums including fantastic new effort Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, the wallflowers in the crowd had no chance with songs like This Fire, No You Girls and The Dark of the Matinée providing the soundtrack.

The quartet even pay homage to Picnic cancellation Giorgio Moroder with a brief segue into I Feel Love, and megahit stomper Take Me Out predictably brings the house down. Absolutely brilliant.
