"Aschenmusik" translates as music from the ashes, and Heinz Holliger's Romancendres was inspired by the fact that Clara Schumann burnt her husband Robert's late Cello Romances 37 years after his death. Holliger speculates that the cello pieces were tied in with the romance between Clara and the young Brahms, and he's filled the spiderweb, ghostly sounds of his Romancendres for cello and piano with hidden quotations and references. The masterly set of Romances for oboe and piano is the disc's only original work by Schumann. The other pieces are arrangements, the A minor Violin Sonata played on cello, the Canonic Pieces, originally for a piano with a pedal board, played by the unlikely combination of oboe d'amore, cello and piano. url.ie/kh67
