The Rose Window

Artist: Arild Andersen
Genre: Jazz
Label: Intuition

The German Intuition label’s European Jazz Legends series captures its subjects live, direct to stereo analog tape, in the pristine acoustics of the Theater Gütersloh in central Germany.

The sixth in the series features Arild Andersen, the great Norwegian bassist who played on Jan Garbarek’s early recordings, collaborated with pioneers George Russell and Don Cherry, and has released more than a dozen records under his own name.

Andersen was part of the generation of Scandinavian musicians who forged a uniquely European sound in jazz in the 1970s, and this live recording proves that at 70, the bassist still has plenty to say.

His young trio, featuring pianist Helge Lien and Bushman’s Revenge drummer Gard Nilssen, provide the perfect foil to Andersen’s huge, ringing tone and warm, singing melodies.
