The Cheesy Mystery

An extract from a story by sixth class, Thomond Primary School, Ballynanty, Co Limerick

One night, Cheesy was deciding if he wanted to do the cheese run. Cheesy called Rolly to ask him for advice.

“Well, should I do the cheese run?” asked Cheesy.

“I don’t know ... you tried to do it last year but you broke your leg and your two fingers,” replied Rolly

“Yeah, but I’ve gotten better. I’ve been training chasing the cheese down the hill. Quick, open your window!” urged Cheesy.

There was a treehouse in between their two houses that connected them that was full of cheese and bread rolls, but when Cheesy looked out the window while he was talking to Rolly, all of them were gone!

Rolly and Cheesy felt devastated. Cheesy needed the cheese to practise cheese catching, and Rolly needed the bread to practise roll-catching. So they decided to go door-to-door every day before the tournament to try and find their stolen cheese and bread, and no one had seen anything until house 37.

House 37 was a big house that looked abandoned and was full of cobwebs. They were nervous to go up to the house, because everyone said it was haunted. But Rolly pushed Cheesy into the garden and said, “Don’t be a baby, it’s your cheese!”

“It’s your rolls as well!” Cheesy said snarkily.

While they were arguing, lighting struck and the front door creaked open, and an old woman in a pink flowery dress walked out.

“Get out of my garden, ye cheese rolls!” she said angrily waving her cane.

Rolly hid behind Cheesy and nudged him to say that he should do the talking.

“We just want to know if you’ve seen our cheese and our rolls?” Cheesy said, his voice cracking.

The old woman smirked evilly.

“Come in if you want to find out,” she said, and she walked inside and vanished into the darkness ...
