A second man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with an attack on an asylum seeker who died after being stabbed in Dublin last weekend.

Rory Carr (21), of Ard na Greine, Seapoint Lane, Balbriggan, appeared before Judge Paula Murphy at Dublin District Court on Wednesday.

He was charged with assault causing harm to Quaham Babatunde and a second man – Adetola Adetuilehim – at South Anne Street in the early hours of Saturday.

Mr Adetuilehim, who is in his 30s, required hospital treatment following the incident.

Mr Carr is also charged with engaging in violent disorder with people unknown. He is one of three people arrested to date as part of the Garda investigation into the incident.

Mr Babatunde was fatally injured when a row between two groups attending a music event in a nightclub spilt out on to the street.

The 34-year-old, originally from Nigeria, had been living in the Ballyogan accommodation centre in south Dublin while awaiting the outcome of his asylum application.

Gardaí said he was found unresponsive at the scene and taken to St James’s Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Garda Paul Cummins told Judge Murphy the accused was charged shortly before 11pm on Tuesday at Pearse Street Garda station. He said Mr Carr “made no reply” to the charges and that there were “objections to bail”.

Defence solicitor Evan Moore said his client was not applying for bail at this stage.

Judge Murphy remanded Mr Carr in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Legal aid was granted after a statement of Mr Carr’s means was presented to the court. Mr Moore said the accused “is not working and has no assets”.

On Tuesday, Jeffrey Bangu (21), of Cardy Rock Crescent, Balbriggan, was remanded in custody by Judge Murphy after being brought before the court over the same matter.

He was charged with assault causing harm to Mr Babatunde at Duke Lane and to Mr Adetuilehim at Soth Anne Street.

He is also accused of violent disorder and with the production of a knife during the course of a fight. He was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.

A 23-year-old man wanted as part of the investigation was arrested by the PSNI in Belfast earlier this week. The suspect was detained by the PSNI at Belfast Port on Monday as he prepared to board a ferry to Liverpool. He remains in police custody in Belfast.
