Gardaí are poised to launch a murder inquiry following the discovery of the body of a man in his 30s in a house in Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary late on Saturday night.

A 24-year-old woman from the Czech Republic was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault.

The man was found unresponsive in a house at O’Callaghan’s Lane, following an apparent stabbing incident.

Officers have requested the services of the State Pathologist’s Office.

The results of a post-mortem examination by a pathologist will guide the investigation, however, detectives are satisfied the injuries were not self-inflicted and so are preparing to launch a murder inquiry.

A 999 call was received shortly after 11.30pm. When the emergency services arrived, they found the man with multiple injuries in the living area of the home.

He was unresponsive and paramedics worked unsuccessfully to try and resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí are not releasing the name of the deceased until all next of kin are notified, however it is understood he is from eastern Europe and had been living in the house for some time.

A woman, who has been arrested, is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows gardaí to hold suspects in custody for up to 24 hours before they have to be charged or released. She has been taken to Clonmel Garda Station for questioning.

The scene has been cordoned off and the Garda Technical Bureau is expected to arrive from Dublin for further analysis.

It is understood the body of the deceased will be removed on Sunday to University Hospital Waterford at Ardkeen for a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile gardaí have begun door-to-door inquiries in the O’Callaghan’s Lane area to establish if anyone heard any disturbance in the house or saw anything suspicious in the cul de sac.

They have also begun canvassing both domestic residences and business premises in Carrick-on-Suir for CCTV footage to help them piece together the deceased’s last movements.

Gardaí have set up an incident room and are appealing to anyone who may have any information about the incident to contact them at Clonmel Garda Station on (052) 617 7640.
