Mr Courtney's appointment remains subject to ratification by the Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications, which he is scheduled to attend later this month.

He joins the State-owned transport company as it attempts to implement a major cost-containment plan, aimed at generating savings of around €11 million.

The Government has also given approval for Mr Courtney’s appointment as a director of CIÉ.

“I was happy to propose Mr Courtney as a director to the board of CIÉ and as chairman of Dublin Bus. Mr Courtney brings with him a set of skills that I know will be valued in both positions, with an academic background that is strong on economics, employment law and corporate legal governance,” Mr Donohoe said.
