A new low-cost airline is to offer direct flights between Dublin and Iceland, with operations beginning at the end of April.

Icelandic airline Play will begin flying between Dublin and Reykjavik three times a week from the end of April. The new route joins Madrid and Brussels as new additions for the summer, bringing to 23 the number of destinations that Play serves.

Last month, the airline said it would begin flights to Lisbon, Bologna, Stuttgart and Prague.

Chief executive Birgir Jónsson said the expansion was part of a bigger transatlantic plan that the airline was planning to begin rolling out in the next few months. Play will begin operations on the North America’s east coast next spring, with Dublin set to play a large part in the transatlantic operations.

The new route was welcomed by Dublin Airport's managing director Vincent Harrison. "The increased access to and from Reykjavik shows how attractive the tourism opportunities are at both ends of this attractive new route."

Play, which is based in Reykjavik's Keflavik International Airport, began operations in June.
