Dublin Airport has opened a new €16 million facility for passengers transferring between flights.

The number of travellers using Dublin to transfer from one flight to another, rather than leaving from or arriving there, has grown from 550,000 to almost 1.6 million since 2013. Their numbers are up 17 per cent this year.

The new facility in the airport's terminal two will handle four times the number of transfer passengers now passing through Dublin, according to its managing director, Vincent Harrison.

"We have been growing Dublin Airport as a connecting gateway between Europe and North America steadily over the past five years and this new transfer facility will help us further expand that business," he said.

Mr Harrison explained that growing this part of the airport’s business helped expand its route network by underpinning the viability of existing services and encouraging airlines to launch new ones.

The new transfer facility is part of a €100 million investment that the airport is making this year.

Dublin is Europe’s sixth largest for transatlantic connections, drawing passengers from the continent and Britain.
