Aer Arann is to extend its franchise agreement with Aer Lingus until 2022, adding two new routes to its network this summer, the airline has confirmed.

Aer Lingus Regional, operated by Aer Arann, will add Dublin to Birmingham and Dublin to Manchester routes, bringing the airline's route network to 24.

Aer Arann said the new routes are expected to increase passenger numbers to 300,000. The airline expects to double its passenger numbers to over two million in five years.

The airline also confirmed a 32 per cent rise in Aer Lingus Regional passenger numbers in 2012, with total passenger growth of 16 per cent over the past two years.

Sean Brogan, interim chief executive at Aer Arann, said completion of Aer Arann' restructuring programme represented a new beginning for the airline.

"Our extended franchise agreement with Aer Lingus to 2022 gives us a firm foundation for growth, and the fleet renewal programme allows us to enhance the passenger offering further."
