Spar has partnered with food waste app Too Good To Go to allow customers to purchase short-life foods in perfect conditions for a third of the usual cost.

Participating stores in Dublin will offer a range of short shelf-life products that are unlikely to be sold on the day, packaging them into ‘surprise bags’ and allowing customers to log into the app and reserve them for pick-up later in-store.

Products that are expected to feature in the surprise bags include fruit, vegetables, salads, prepared meals, breads and pastries.

"Research shows that food waste is estimated to account for approximately 8 per cent of global greenhouses gas emissions, making it a key issue that the retail sector as a whole must tackle head on," said Colin Donnelly, sales director at Spar.
