Netflix customers in Ireland are set to see a price increase to some of their subscription plans.
The price increases will affect new customers immediately.
A spokeswoman for the company said: “Existing members will learn of the increase from the 19th October and will be notified at least 30 days in advance, based on their billing cycle, on when they will see the price change. Members will be notified with an email and also see a notification within the service. The price change will roll out to members over the course of the next several months. As always, members can view pricing information within their account settings.”
Customers on the two-stream HD tier will be charged an extra €1 per month, bringing their subscription fee up to €10.99 per month.
Customers who have the 4S plan will be charged an extra €2 per month, bringing their monthly bill up to €13.99.
The basic plan that limits customers to one screen at a time without high-definition will remain at €7.99 per month.
The price increase reflects the service’s US plans, where it introduced the first rises in monthly fees in two years, hiking costs for two of its three main subscription plans as it spends heavily on original content.
Netflix faces growing competition from Amazon and other sites such as Hulu in the United States.
In a statement, Netflix said its plans and prices are adjusted occasionally.
“We add more exclusive TV shows and movies, introduce new product features and improve the overall Netflix experience to help members find something great to watch even faster,” said the statement.
Over the past five years, the number of titles available to watch in Ireland has increased by 218 per cent, it said.
Customers who are unsure which subscription they have can check the “plan details” section in the account tab of their user profile.
