Assuming its proposed scheme of arrangement got the thumbs-up from creditors last Friday, the beleaguered telco may successfully emerge from examinership, depending on Mr Justice Peter Kelly’s decision.

Incidentally, one of the most recent interactions between these two parties was at a Dublin charity table quiz run by the Business Journalists Association.

A crack team representing Eircom was more than a little unnerved to discover that the guest adjudicator on the night was none other than Mr Justice Kelly, who also happens to be overseeing its examinership.

The eminent judge fulfilled his role as invigilator admirably, stalking the room in search of smartphone cheats and heaping shame and opprobrium upon those found guilty. Fortunately, Eircom’s team played by the rules.

However, it will be all business this week when the biggest examinership case in Irish history returns to court and the outcome will be watched with interest.

Let’s hope that the latest chapter in the Eircom’s sorry saga will have a positive ending.
