A significant portion of Digicel's network in Anguilla and the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) in the Caribbean has suffered "extensive damage", the company has said.

The Denis O’Brien owned company’s fixed line PLAY services in the two regions will require rebuilding, but that will depend on the rebuilding of the electricity networks in Anguilla and TCI. However, the company suggests that good progress is being made. While exact subscriber numbers in the two regions is unclear, it is understood to be slightly above 10,000.

“Our engineers and rigging crews are working around the clock to restore service fully to our customers as soon as possible,” Digicel said in a statement.

Earlier in the week The Irish Times reported that Digicel, which operates in 27 markets in the Caribbean and central America, deployed a team of 700 workers to get services back up and running in its hurricane-ravaged Caribbean islands heartland.

During Hurricane Irma the company provided free mobile phone minutes to its customers to communicate with other Digicel subscribers. On the islands of Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, BVI, Dominica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis and the Turks and Caicos Islands, customers received $10 of fee credit over the 48 hours at the height of the storm.
