John Aldridge believes Real Sociedad supporters will give David Moyes "every chance" to succeed at the struggling La Liga club.

Moyes has signed an 18-month contract and his first job will be to improve their fortunes after a grim start to the season which has yielded just two wins in their first 11 league games.

Former Republic of Ireland striker Aldridge became Sociedad’s first non-Basque signing when he joined from Liverpool in 1989 and proved an instant success, scoring 33 goals in two seasons before returning to England.

Former Aston Villa striker Dalian Atkinson also had success with Sociedad, while John Toshack and Chris Coleman have managed the club in the past.

Aldridge told Sky Sports News: “I see the Basque people as lovely people, very proud people. They will give him (Moyes) every chance.

“When I went there was a bit of scepticism, but when I scored a few goals, there were no problems. It’s a great place to live.”

Former Blackburn boss Steve Kean spent a period with the club as Coleman's assistant.

Kean believes Moyes and Sociedad will prove a good fit but warned the former Manchester United boss he will have to change the club’s selling mentality if he is to enjoy long-term success.

Sociedad finished last season in seventh place, but the sale of star man Antoine Griezmann to Atletico Madrid contributed to the current slump which led to the dismissal of Jagoba Arrasate.

Kean told Sky Sports News: “I have spoken to David. He is very excited about the move. It’s the right fit for him.

“Basque players like to work hard and that’s the way David coaches. He’ll love the club. He’ll love the people.

“The only challenge he’ll have is when he does really well, which I’m sure he will, is hanging on to the better players because they tend to sell.”
