The Republic of Ireland head for Germany tomorrow having enjoyed success over their Euro 2016 rivals in the past. However, they have not done so for some time.

Here’s a recap.

Republic of Ireland 5 Germany 2, friendly, Dublin, October 17th, 1936

Three years before the outbreak of the Second World War, Ireland took on and defeated West Germany comprehensively at Dalymount Park despite goals from Stanislaus Kobierski and Fritz Szepan cancelling out Joey Donnelly's opener. Tom Davis levelled with a 35th-minute penalty and second half strikes from Matty Geoghegan, Donnelly and Davis won the day.

The Germans were not so accommodating when they returned to Dalymount shortly before the 1966 World Cup, in which they would go on to lose 4-2 to hosts England in the final. First-half goals from Helmut Haller and Franz Beckenbauer put them in the driving seat before Wolfgang Overath's second-half double.

When Miroslav Klose headed Germany into an early lead, the writing looked to be on the wall for Ireland. But it was then that youngster Robbie Keane made his mark on the biggest stage of all, running on to substitute Niall Quinn's flick-on to fire his side to a creditable draw.

This horror show at the Aviva Stadium very nearly cost then manager Giovanni Trapattoni his job. Ireland were dismantled in spectacular style with Marco Reus and Toni Kroos each claiming doubles either side of efforts from Mesut Ozil and Klose. Andy Keogh's late goal represented no consolation whatsoever.

Trapattoni had gone by the time the Republic travelled to the RheinEnergie Stadion for the return with Under-21s boss Noel King in temporary charge. Sami Khedira, Andre Schurrle and Ozil did the damage this time, although the final goal only arrived at the death.
