Return to be Sweet for royal trainer

Lord Huntingdon launches another raid on the Galway Festival today when he runs Sweet Wilhelmina in the McDonogh Handicap

Lord Huntingdon launches another raid on the Galway Festival today when he runs Sweet Wilhelmina in the McDonogh Handicap. The West Ilsley-based Huntingdon is the trainer to the British royal family. He trained Granny's Bank to finish third to Alder Rose in the 1986 McDonogh and is hopeful of a similarly good performance from Sweet Wilhelmina.

"She's going to stud so in the long term it makes sense to run her in a Listed race. I think she will get the trip alright as her best run last year was over eight and a half furlongs at Epsom," he said yesterday.

Sweet Wilhelmina is owned by Croydon-based Chris Van Hoorn, who is of Dutch extraction, and the filly carries the orange and white colours of the Dutch football team.

Huntingdon's career has blossomed since Granny's Bank and was highlighted by the dual Ascot Gold Cup winner Drum Taps. He was unable to confirm if he would travel to Galway to watch Sweet Wilhelmina run.
