Racing: Charlie Swan failed to end his glittering riding career on a winner when Like-A-Butterfly managed only third in the Aintree Hurdle. The nine-times champion jockey's other ride, on Take Flite, ended with a fall.

It was a disappointing end to a career that featured 1,312 winners in just over 20 years. But all concerned were happy he finished in one piece.

"He is the most knowledgeable of men. I know of no man whose judgement I respect more," said JP McManus, who will be a major owner with Swan in his training career.

Swan was applauded in the parade ring before the Aintree Hurdle and also revealed he was applauded by fans after getting up from Take Flite's fall. Swan said: "It was very nice but there is always one, and a guy shouted 'f--- you, you should have retired yesterday!"

Swan, 35, returned from Liverpool to saddle Saintly Rachel to victory in the last race at Tramore yesterday. He now hopes to expand his string to 60 horses.
