The former Lions, Ireland and Blackrock open-side flanker Fergus Slattery played in the famous 1974 Lions Tour to South Africa, captained by Willie John McBride. The team historically won three Tests to one. Regarded as one of the finest back-row players ever to come out of Ireland, he will no doubt have inspired many rugby players around Blackrock and further, including the schools team who face De La Salle Churchtown today in the second round of the Leinster Senior Cup.
Founded: The centenary year was 1982-83 so the club was founded a hundred years before that.
Membership: The strongest element of our membership at Blackrock is unquestionably our youths, the under-20s. The club have a rich crop at the moment Keating, Quinlan, Cullen and Carey to name but a few. Hopefully in time that will be able take us up the table.
Honours: The club have failed to win the AIL, the ultimate prize, while they have won secondary competitions which don't have the significance they once had. But the club have continued to produce international players which I believe will augur well for future honours.
Finest moment: The most recent one was scoring my first goal for the veteran hockey team. In rugby the achievement in our centenary year of winning the Leinster Cup and League and All-Ireland festival in the same year, 1982, stands out for me.
Worst moment: It has to be getting beaten by Trinity and UCD in the mid-seventies in the Leinster Senior Cup.
Hero: Rose Kelly, the chairlady of the ladies committee who has done outstanding work for the club over the years and best remembered for her pork steaks. Also Dave O'Leary for his commitment and devotion to the club, which remains undiminished.
Greatest rivals: New Zealand. I have to say that. Another is Willie Duggan - having to play with him that is. But also St Mary's, Lansdowne and Wanderers because if we didn't win the cup, they were the other guys who did.
