Former Mayo defender Pat Holmes is expected to be named as John Maughan's successor tonight after a meeting in Castlebar. The Westport bank official has emerged as the clear frontrunner after a number of weeks of speculation in the wake of the vacancy left by Maughan, who stepped down as manager after the All-Ireland semi-final defeat by Cork in August.
Holmes enjoyed a long and distinguished career with Mayo, excelling during the county's run to the All-Ireland final in 1996 when he was particularly impressive during the drawn final and unsuccessful replay against Meath. He remained in close contact with Maughan after retiring from the intercounty scene.
It was initially thought Peter Forde might assume control, but it has recently been confirmed that he did not take part in the interview process.
Other names linked with the post were former Donegal manager Brian McEniff - who has business interests in the county - and Martin McHugh, who managed Cavan to an All-Ireland semi-final in 1997.
The Kerry selectors were announced yesterday morning after a postal ballot was completed in the county on Tuesday evening. Paidi O Se had already been appointed as trainer and John O'Keeffe as technical adviser. The selectors appointed were Jack O'Connor (Dromid Pearses), Eddie `Tatler' O'Sullivan (Dr Crokes) and Eamon Walsh (Knocknagoshel).
