Ross County chairman Roy MacGregor could hardly contain his glee when his club was drawn at home to Rangers in the Scottish Cup and predicted that Saturday, February 17th would be the happiest, proudest day of his life.
But? Well, Sky Sports stepped in and switched the tie to the Sunday for live coverage. So? MacGregor is a practising Free Presbyterian. And? Sunday is a sacred day of rest so, he says, he has no option but to stay at home on the 18th and will miss the match. Gutted.
Paraguay coach Sergio Makarian will sympathise with him. He's just resigned after being accused of taking his religious beliefs too far by a Paraguayan FA official. "According to his concepts, if we draw it is thanks to God and if we win it is thanks to him," sniffed Antonio Colman Rodriguez. And, with that, Makarian was gone. Not even divine intervention will get him back.
