A special area of Healy Park is to be designated for Irish speakers during Saturday's Allianz Football League game between Tyrone and Derry.

The initiative is part of the Coirnéal na Gaeilge drive to promote the use of the Irish language at gaelic games.

“We are encouraging supporters who speak the language at any level to congregate in this area and to converse using the medium of Irish for the duration of the game,” said a county board spokesman.

“We hope by identifying this area that people will welcome the opportunity to converse freely and integrate their native language into their social lives.”

An Coirnéal na Gaeilge area is located beside the Press Box on the Terrace.

Tyrone come into the game off-the-back of a positive four-point win against Mayo in Castlebar three weeks ago, having lost the league opener to Monaghan a week earlier. During that match, their last competitive fixture at Healy Park, the action was disrupted for over a half-an-hour by floodlight failure.
