THE prospect of Wimbledon relocating to Dublin appeared to recede yesterday following the latest developments in this on going saga. Amid cross channel reports that a relocation to the Wimbledon dog track had become more feasible, UEFA underlined its opposition to the Dublin option.

In the European, governing body's strongest critique yet of the Dublin proposal, a UEFA spokesman, Salvatore Cuccu, stressed that UEFA are specific about this. Wimbledon are an English club with a home in England and UEFA is not in favour of them moving to a foreign country.

"It is okay to be innovative and look for new opportunities, but this move would cause a great many problems. It is regrettable that a club from the home of foot ball should be involved in a venture of this sort. It goes against the spirit of football, of crossing national boundaries, and we are not in favour of it."

While further reports of the Irish based consortium's takeover were regurgitated yesterday, London's Evening Standard reported that Wembley PLC have funded research into the redevelopment of Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium.

This has the backing of Merton Council, who have approved Sainsbury's modified application for a supermarket development at Wimbledon's old ground of Plough Lane. On foot of this Merton and the greyhound track have offered Wimbledon FC the alternative of the greyhound stadium - pending a three way investment of £15 million for a redeveloped, 20,000 all seater stadium.

The Evening Standard also reported that the proposed takeover by the Irish consortium would not be dependent on the club relocating to Dublin.
