Carton wins his appeal against suspension

Dublin hurler Peadar Carton won his appeal before the GAA's Central Appeals Committee on Thursday night.

Dublin hurler Peadar Carton won his appeal before the GAA's Central Appeals Committee on Thursday night.

According to the Croke Park press office the appeal was upheld on technical grounds but under new disciplinary rules the matter has been referred back to the Central Competitions Control Committee for a re-hearing.

Carton's suspension would have kept him out of Dublin's All-Ireland under-21 campaign. He was suspended for pulling across Tipperary's Paul Curran and breaking his jaw, a foul trenchantly criticised at the time by then Tipp manager Michael "Babs" Keating.

Meanwhile, Peter Ford has stepped down as manager of the Galway footballers after three years in charge.

The Ballinrobe man took the county to a Connacht title in his first year in charge and also to the 2005 All-Ireland under-21 championship.

Progress since then had been disappointing with first Mayo and this year Sligo winning the province. Last month the county were eliminated from the championship by Meath. Ford informed the county board on Thursday that he would not be going forward again.

The GAA have confirmed that all tickets for today's Dublin v Derry game have been sold. The GAA have also asked supporters to allow plenty of time to gain access to the stadium and have confirmed that the game will start at 3pm as scheduled.
