Carberry check-up

Paul Carberry, who fractured two ribs in a fall eight days ago, will find out on Friday when he can resume race riding

Paul Carberry, who fractured two ribs in a fall eight days ago, will find out on Friday when he can resume race riding. Currently second to Ruby Walsh in the jockeys' table and the intended rider of Dorans Pride in the Gold Cup, he will meet Dr Fred Kenny and his situation will be "reviewed".

Another jockey on the easy list is Ken Whelan who sustained back injuries in a fall at Thurles on Thursday and who is currently in Waterford Regional Hospital.

"He has fractured vertebrae and he has a nasty back injury. Thankfully it is not a spinal injury but he will be out for some weeks," said the Turf Club medical officer, Dr Walter Halley, yesterday.

A new £75,000 handicap hurdle called the Power's Handicap Hurdle will be run at the Fairyhouse Easter meeting and will become the joint most valuable handicap hurdle run in Ireland along with the Ladbroke.

The new race, to be run over two miles, will replace the Bisquit Cognac Handicap Hurdle and will be the second most valuable race of the Easter festival after the Irish Grand National.
