All you need to know about The White Lotus season 3

It’s back, it’s bursting with intrigue and it’s all been leading to this. Get ready for the wildest trip of your life

The Emmy Award-winning The White Lotus returns to our screens via Sky Stream today after a more than two year hiatus, this time around setting the titular five-star resort in Thailand. And just like the previous adventures – first in Hawaii and then in Sicily – you can expect all manner of perfectly coiffed, well-manicured chaos from the morally vague guests and the exasperated staff who cater to their every whim.

What’s it about?

Similar to seasons one and two, the third iteration of ‘The White Lotus’ is an ensemble piece focused on a variety of characters; some looking for respite from their problems back home, others apparently intent on creating new ones while away.

Among the former category is Timothy Ratliff (Jason Isaacs), holidaying with his wife Victoria (the immaculately cast Parker Posey) and their kids when he is the recipient of some bad news – or as he puts it, “just work stuff.”

“What am I supposed to tell my family?” he bellows into his phone in the trailer. “That we’re poor now and daddy’s going to prison?”

Promos for the third season suggest that the contrast between Eastern spirituality and western excess provides the bedrock for the new season – and with a body bag also shown in trailers, you can also expect a whodunnit element to permeate the narrative just as it did in seasons one and two.

Elsewhere in the third season, a trio of long-term friends on a girls’ trip (not “old friends” as they very specifically put it) join in the intrigue, while Natasha Rothwell returns from season one as spa manager Belinda from the first season’s White Lotus hotel in Maui. Sadly, the utterly outstanding Jennifer Coolidge – so effective as the world weary, bedraggled socialite Tanya in seasons one and two – is absent this time. Other new additions to the cast include Leslie Bibb, Walton Goggins, Michelle Monaghan and Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Where is it set?

The White Lotus moves east for its third season towards the white sandy beaches of Thailand for what creator Mike White described as a “supersized” version of the series, adding that some parts of what made it to screen came to him as a literal fever dream after he became ill while scouting locations in the northern city of Chiang Mai. Other filming locations included Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui.

The third season also continues the trend from the first two by filming at a Four Seasons resort, this time at the chain’s luxurious Koh Samui hotel which bills itself as possessing “stunning ocean views with elegant Thai-inspired design”.

The location is expected to spark a tourism boom for the region similar to those experienced in Maui and Taormina – where hoards of fans descended, desperate for a glimpse into The White Lotus magic.
