After having worked for EMC Corporation, based in Massachusetts, for nearly 18 years, I relocated to Cork last July. My 16-strong team manages the HR function for over 3,000 EMC employees in Ireland.
Having travelled to Ireland for business a number of years ago, I was excited to have the chance and take on the challenge of coming to Ireland on a long-term assignment.
Similar to the US, there is a very entrepreneurial and can-do attitude in Ireland. The Irish are ambitious, have a strong work ethic and love to learn and develop.
The Irish place more emphasis on building lasting relationships, with much work done face-to-face rather than over the phone and email. This is important as it encourages collaboration, problem-solving, learning, creativity and innovation. Building a network of people is important here and leveraged for opportunities with much success.
There is a close-knit business and political environment, with senior people in both being highly accessible. Success breeds success and meeting and learning from people is key in a developing society – something that is a major advantage in Ireland, particularly for the younger generation. I have been fortunate to meet Taoiseach Enda Kenny and other senior cabinet Ministers during my short time in Ireland!
I enjoy the work-life balance that Ireland offers. The Irish work hard, while also finding a healthy balance and appreciate their personal time with family and friends, which I feel is important.
