Sir, – I believe Sr Stanislaus Kennedy to be right (Opinion, August 26th). We should have aimed for an intake of up to 1,000 Afghan refugees, even if we did not or could not achieve this number in practice, under the difficult circumstances; at least we could hold our heads up for trying.
It was far better than the embarrassing announcement by the Government that around 200 refugees would be given sanctuary; an increase of 50 on a previous announcement .
The worse thing about this is that they seem completely unconscious of the utter banality of their undertaking. Is this the best they can really do?
Well I say, with this pathetic effort, the Government is certainly not acting in my name.
