Water bathing quality

Sir, – So many activities have been denied to the public over the last 16 months which has led to people utilising amenities which remained available during this time, most notably sea swimming which has seen a huge increase in popularity.

Would it therefore be too much to ask that the water quality could be tested more regularly, particularly in Seapoint, Co Dublin, which is prone to high levels of bacteria (including E-coli) after heavy rainfall. A water sample taken on July 30th determined the levels of pollution too high and so a bathing restriction notice was put in place with an expected duration of three days. Yet the next water sample is not due (according to beaches.ie) until August 9th, a gap of 10 days!

How do the public know if the water is therefore safe to swim in after the “expected” three days are over! – Yours, etc,

SILVIA MASTERSON,
