Sir, – I see that the prime minister of Singapore has presented Donald Trump with an early birthday cake in advance of the US president’s birthday tomorrow. The cake, a large flan filled with exotic fruit, was adorned with a single candle. What an appropriate gift – an oversized, not very bright fruitcake. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Watching Mr Trump leaving Singapore to the cheers of the little people like myself, I suddenly thought of the effete dotards in the Irish media for whom this must be a horrible time. Perhaps they might order an extra strong latte with their croissants this morning? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Donald Trump tweeted ahead of his Singapore meeting with Kim: “We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!” Does “a real deal” mean one that will include a new Trump Tower casino, hotel and golf resort in Pyongyang and environs? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – One must in a way admire Donald Trump’s attempts to tackle the US trade deficit, which has been going out of kilter for decades. However, in wanting the rest of the world to pay for it, he seemingly misses the point that the root cause is the US’s own massive overconsumption of the world’s resources. Perhaps the disruption he causes will lead to more awareness of the world’s need for sustainability or am I just a hopeless optimist? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Mr Trump and Mr Kim have agreed on a path toward denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. Why get hung up on such trivia as the lack of any timeline, or any acceptance of weapons inspections? The two men shook hands on the matter.
What could possibly go wrong? – Yours, etc,
