Rebranding ‘Social Protection’

Sir, – I note that the Department of Social Protection has got a new name to reflect its enhanced role (News, September 1st). Since Saturday last it is known as the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

It also has a new logo. But you need to look closely to spot the difference between the old logo and the new.

The old logo featured an open hand and a bird taking flight, presumably a symbol of protection and support.

In the new logo the bird’s eye has been removed, which raises a question: why would you release a blind bird from your hand? Viewed another way perhaps the hand is out to catch the bird flying blind.

But perhaps the most plausible explanation of all is that the department decided to remove the eye to help preserve the bird’s anonymity. – Yours, etc,
