A chara, – I refer to your editorial on a new Dublin suburb, which “has been given the unlovely working title of Ballyboggan after a little-known local road” (“The Irish Times view on Dublin’s new suburb: more urgency is required”, Editorial, April 24th).
This little-known road is most likely named after one of the many townlands of the same name in counties Galway, Meath and Wexford.
The new Ballyboggan or Baile an Bhógain should take no shame in this wonderful name. Our little patch of Ireland is more than lovely and we hope the new community of the so-called “unlovely Ballyboggan” are as blessed as we are with a wonderful vibrant community of neighbours, family and friends.
We hope they take pride in a name that, in some cases, has existed since the 1600s. – Yours, etc,
