Tax refunds and red tape

If so much is owed to taxpayers, the system is clearly not working

Sir, – The reason that so many taxpayers don’t claim tax relief on expenses, especially medical, is that despite what Revenue says about it being simple, it is in fact anything but (“More than 500,000 workers in Ireland are due tax refunds they have not claimed”, Your Money, February 4th).

Of course those half a million taxpayers need that €400 million a year that is theirs but are put off by the complexity of the procedure. Simplify the system and it will be claimed in full, and I am one of those taxpayers. – Yours, etc,
