The 46A – the route to happiness

Disco days

Sir, – News about the demise of the iconic 46A bus has even reached Spain, where my sister currently lives (Deirdre Falvey, “Goodbye to the 46A: End of legendary Dublin bus route made famous in song”, Travel, November 24th).

She reminded me of the days of the last bus from Dún Laoghaire on Saturday nights which would be jam-packed with revellers heading up to Stradbrook disco. Often the bus would be so full that it was unable to get up the York Road. The driver would ask for volunteers to get off. No-one would budge until he promised to wait for them at the top of the hill. And so, the 46A would chug up the hill chased by trusting, and in some cases meandering, passengers. Sure enough, the driver would be waiting there patiently to take them all to nirvana. Happy days. – Yours, etc,

RONNIE SIMPSON,
