Sir, – Jade Wilson’s excellent article “Overseas cash buyers snap up bargain apartments that first-time buyers cannot get because of defects” (News, September 25th) highlights the failure of successive governments to tackle the ongoing problem of design, materials or workmanship defects not in compliance with the then current building regulations.

Until we have an independent verification of compliance system by local authorities, cash buyers can ignore fire regulations and “snap up” potentially dangerous " bargains”. – Yours, etc,
