Sir, – The President of Ireland used to be above getting involved in politics. The current holder of the office cannot confine himself to his office. – Yours, etc,

ROBERT SHARPE,

Cootehill,

Sir, – If the current Government gets a little anxious every time the President goes off-message, spare a thought for the future government who will have to work under a potentially combative McGregor presidency. – Yours, etc,

ANTHONY MUNNELLY,

Cabra,

Dublin 7.

Sir, – I refer to the letter from David Clarke (September 24th) in which he suggests that in the event of a competition for the worst president in the history of our State, he would nominate Michael D Higgins.

I would remind Mr Clarke that the President has stood for election, on two occasions, and won.

He may not have the approval of your correspondent but he certainly has the approval of the Irish people as expressed through the ballot box. – Yours, etc,

JOHN KANE,

Limerick.
