Cathriona White, an Irish beauty therapist and former girlfriend of actor Jim Carrey, has been found dead in her Los Angeles residence, according to police in the US.

Members of the Los Angeles Police Department were called to her home on Monday night, where they found her body. Her family has been notified of her sudden death, and they are receiving assistance from the Irish Consulate in San Francisco.

Officials from the LAPD coroner’s office are to carry out a postmortem in the coming days.

Ms White, from Cappawhite, Co Tipperary, moved to California in 2009. She became romantically involved with the 53-year-old Hollywood star three years later when the pair were said to have met on a film set. They were frequently pictured together in the following months before splitting in 2013.

There were reports the relationship may have resumed this year when Mr Carrey, wearing a Tipperary GAA jersey, was pictured with Ms White.

Speaking to various media outlets after the news became public, Mr Carrey expressed his shock following the death. “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona,” he said. “She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”

His most recent messages on Twitter from just under two weeks ago featured photographs attributed to Ms White.

Ms White amassed behind-the-scenes movie credits in the US for her work as a make-up artist on The Online Gamer comedy TV series, as well as short films Firefly and Solitude. She also played the role of an extra in various productions.
