An elderly British couple have been found shot dead on a sofa in their Spanish home.

Ex-pats Peter and Jean Tarsey (both 77), were found dead at their Alicante villa on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the Guardia Civil - Spain’s national police force - said “at around 4.15pm yesterday, some friends of the couple went to their villa because they had not been seen for a few days.

“They found the door was open and there were no signs of a break-in.

The spokeswoman said the Guardia Civil is awaiting the results of postmortem examinations, and investigations continue.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “We can confirm the death of two British nationals in Alicante, Spain. We stand ready to provide consular assistance.”

The Guardia Civil confirmed the couple were Peter and Jean Tarsey.
