GARDAÍ IN north Cork have launched an investigation after a 60-year-old woman was attacked and sexually assaulted while returning home from a social night out.

She was attacked in the Turrets area of Charleville as she was walking home from a bingo session at about 10.15pm on Sunday.

The woman had seen the man standing on the roadway and had passed him by when he came up behind her and hit her on the back of the head and dragged her into the driveway of a private house. She was beaten and sexually assaulted at the back of the house.

She managed to flag down a motorist who brought her to Charleville Garda station, where she was interviewed briefly before being brought to the sexual assault unit at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital in Cork.
