The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, said yesterday that Irish people had a historical opportunity and a duty to ensure the State was fully committed to the European Community. Mr Ahern was opening a €5-million extension to TG4's headquarters at Baile na hAbhann, Co Galway.
He said a vote in favour of the Nice Treaty would ensure that Ireland remained at the heart of Europe. During his first visit to the Irish language television station's headquarters, the Taoiseach said regarding EU enlargement: "Le daonlathas bainte amach acu, tá fís ag muintir na tíortha sin a bheith páirteach san Aontas Eorpach sna blianta atá romhainn.
"Níl ach an taon aisling amháin acu don todhchaí - a náiteanna cearta a ghlacadh taobh istigh den Aontas Eorpach." He said that in less than six years since coming on air, TG4 had greatly enriched Irish cultural life.
The TG4 ceannasaí, Mr Pól Ó Gallchóir, said the extension was a symbol of growth and a vote of confidence in the future.
