THE STATE Pathologist will today carry out a postmortem on a 25-year-old man who died yesterday, 11 days after he was put on life support at Waterford Regional Hospital after a violent incident.

Gardaí said that Damien Organ and his brother Liam (27), both of William Street in the city, were set upon with “hurleys and implements” on March 21st at a secluded area of the People’s Park.

Liam Organ is recovering after he suffered a fractured jaw and bruising to his upper body in the attack, at about 11.40pm on the date in question.

However, his brother Damien sustained injuries in the attack which left him unconscious.

It is understood that the Organ family, including Mr Organ’s mother Olive and father Liam; sisters Suzie, Claire and Emma and his brothers Robbie and Liam, had been maintaining a bedside vigil at the hospital since the attack. The family originally comes from Kilmacthomas in Co Waterford.

On March 24th, two Waterford men appeared in court charged with the assault of Liam Organ, causing him harm.

Four people in their 20s were arrested by gardaí in Waterford on March 22nd.

Two men, aged 19 and 20, were detained at Waterford Garda station, while two women, aged 20 and 27, were released at Tramore on March 23rd.

Files are to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in respect of both women.

Martin O’Brien (20), who lives in an apartment on the quay in Waterford city, and Kieran Deegan (19) of the same address, appeared at the District Court charged with the assault of Damien Organ, causing him harm, on March 21st.

Both men were further remanded on bail yesterday with a number of conditions attached.

At the hearing, Judge David Kennedy granted the men bail on their own bonds of €1,000 each and independent sureties of €1,000, with half of the sums to be lodged.
